Leon James Bynum is the Executive Director
and a founding member of the Harmony Theatre
Company. He was the company's founding Artistic
Director, serving from 2005 to 2007. Originally
from Richmond, Virginia, Mr. Bynum is a graduate
of Columbia University where he majored in African-
American Studies (History, Literature, and Culture)
and was the recipient of the prestigious John Kluge
Fellowship Award for Academic Excellence, as well
as other national honors. While at Columbia, Mr.
Bynum also studied music (composition,theory,
instrumental performance, and classical voice) and
theatre (history, theatre, design, and performance).
Having directed, performed, choreographed,
designed, produced, and written for various theatres
all over the United States, he is a veteran of nearly
one hundred productions, including A Raisin in the
Sun, Bubbling Brown Sugar, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s
Nest, Uncle Vanya, Annie, Julius Caesar, Medea,
Dreamgirls, Annie Get Your Gun, Medea, Guys and Dolls,
Oliver, Little Shop of Horrors, Oliver!, Purlie Victorious,
Jekyll and Hyde, Death of a Salesman, The Pirates of
Penzance, The Wiz, Kiss Me, Kate, You're a Good Man,
Charlie Brown, The Colored Museum, A Chorus Line, The
House of Bernarda Alba, The Wizard of Oz, Amahl and
the Night Visitors, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way
to the Forum, How to Succeed in Business without Really
Trying!, The Odd Couple, Romeo and Juliet, Good News!,
and Oklahoma! Mr. Bynum has been privileged to
study under Amiri Baraka, John Russell Brown,
Peter Schumann, Austin Quigley, and Sabrina
Pillars. Mr. Bynum wrote and composed Beware:
Bernadette! A Musical Fable and Richmond: A Musical
Fantasia, which premiered in the Theatre District in
2006 and 2008, respectively. In 2008, Mr. Bynum
starred in and co-wrote A Wake! A Musical
Vaudeville, as well as the workshop recording of Code
Switching: An Africana Pageant. In 2009, Mr. Bynum's
The Composition was presented as part of Target
Margin Theatre's "Theatre of Tomorrow" series and
also contributed songs to a musical version of H. P.
Lovecraft's The Festival: A Blacklight Extravaganza at
Swedenborg Hall in University Heights, California.
Mr. Bynum has directed Company, Cabaret, Once on
This Island, Beware: Bernadette! A Musical Fable,
Richmond: A Musical Fantasia, Code Switching: An
Africana Pageant, and The Composition with the
Harmony Theatre Company. When he's not being
theatrical, Mr. Bynum is serving as the Assistant
Director at Columbia University's Center for the
Study of Ethnicity and Race. Mr. Bynum wishes to
